What Are Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs)?

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) are written by Alberta students in Grades 6 and 9. The tests assess student learning in key subject areas and provide information about student achievement across the province.

PAT Subjects and Test Dates

Provincial Achievement Tests are offered in:

  • English Language Arts and Français/French Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

PATs take place in January, May, and June, with some Grade 9 students writing in January. Grade 9 students enrolled in Knowledge and Employability (K&E) programs also complete PATs in core subjects.

Provincial Achievement Tests help:

  • Determine whether students are meeting expected learning outcomes
  • Provide information about student achievement in Alberta
  • Support improvements to student learning
